City View Roof Deck

Philadelphia row houses are often short on space, so roof decks are used to increase livable area. In this case, the owners had a vision for city view entertaining, as well as creating a place for “backyard” gardening. We shaped an outdoor room through the placement of custom planters that were constructed from reclaimed mushroom wood, a local by-product of the mushroom farming industry. Gardening planters were placed on the western edge of the roof, offering a sunny space for the homeowners to grow their own vegetables and herbs, as well as to create a backdrop for their outdoor living room. Pollinator plants were integrated throughout the design to pollinate the homeowners’ crops, while also adding to pollinator habitat on this bee-loving city block.
